About Us
We are a privately held biotechnology company pioneering the development and commercialization of promising first-in-class repurposed artemisinin-based therapeutics for cancer, inflammation and infectious diseases.

Mission
Our mission is to establish an integrated specialty pharmaceutical company for the design, development and advancement of novel classes of therapeutics that will offer more highly selective, effective and safer treatment options for people and companion animals afflicted with cancer, other serious proliferative and inflammatory disorders, and infectious diseases.

History
The use of novel artemisinin compounds to treat cancer was first studied in the early 1990's.  Around the same time, a series of new artemisinin compounds called trioxane dimers were being synthesized and developed.  A trioxane dimer consists of two artemisinin molecules permanently attached together by a linker.  Originally developed for malaria, artemisinin dimers have been found to possess both potent anti-malarial activity and anti-cancer activities, while retaining the excellent safety profile of the parent molecule.

1993.  Artemisinin is tested against leukemia and breast cancer cells.  Co-administration of artemisinin and transferrin, an iron-carrying protein, produces rapid death in these cancer cells while having virtually no effect on corresponding normal cells.

2004.  A conjugated compound is developed in which artemisinin is permanently attached to transferrin, delivering a targeted therapy in one package via the cell membrane transferrin receptor, and further enhancing the selectivity and toxicity of artemisinin towards cancer cells.

2005.  Even more selective and effective therapies for cancer are developed, including artemisinin attached to iron-binding molecules (chelators) that starve cancer cells and activate artemisinin, and artemisinin attached to transferrin receptor-binding peptides.

2006.  Artemisia BioMedical is founded to continue development and commercialization of these and other promising new therapeutics.

2009~  Novel artemisinin dimers and conjugated compounds are developed with enhanced selectivity and powerful anti-cancer and anti-malarial effects.
